Melanie Brown, YPD Director :: Grant Memorial AME Church Chicago, IL :: 2007

The Young Peoples Division of the Women's Missionary Society have been long time advocates of the fight against hunger. We participate in the Chicago annual Hunger Walker held in June. On Feb 4th, the YPDers stood with their pots in hand while church members walked down the isles and gave dollar after dollar. This was a great way to get people walking inside (because it was so cold outside, 0 degrees). It was great!

Kris Mares :: Greenville United Methodist Church - UMYF Greenville, KY :: 2007

This is the first year that our youth group participated in the Souper Bowl of Caring. We did the Sunday School lesson, some of the skits, the Children's Moment and bulletin announcements/inserts. What a blessing to have all of those resources! It really made our first effort a success! We raised over $400 and had almost half of our youth group participated in the Service Blitz!! All while having a good time too!!

Mig and Dwight Gallian :: Trinity United Methodist Youth Group Crawfordsville, IN :: 2007

Trinity United Methodist Youth Group sponsored a Souper Bowl of Caring Sundae Luncheon on Feb. 4th after church services. The youth group came up with the idea of serving soup and having a sundae bar for desert. The youth asked local grocery stores for donations and Krogers and County Market gave gift certificates to purchase the food. Some members of the church donated soups and some youth made their own special recipes. The youth advertised in local newspapers and passed out flyers to neighborhood surroundings. The youth decided to give the money to F.I.S.H. a local Food pantry in Montgomery County.

Marilyn S. Larson, Secretary :: Community Church of Fontana Fontana, WI :: 2007

When our junior high youth does Souper Bowl Sunday we make three different kinds of soup. The congregation always request us to make Potato Cheese Soup. Even though the weather outside was -5 with a windchill of -20 we still earned $142 and 81 cans of soup was donated to the local food pantry.
Potato Cheese Soup (2 times)
12 med./large potatoes
1 lb bacon
2 med./large onion
2 cups of milk
8 cups of chicken broth
4 lb box of velveeta cheese
Peel and dice potatoes into small cubes. Boil then until soft, not mushy. Chop bacon and onion. In a big pot, cook bacon and onion until bacon starts to brown and onions are soft. Add chicken broth. Add all but 4 cups of cooked cubed potatoes. In a blender, blend 4 cups of potatoes with 2 cups of milk until smooth-add to the pot. Put 2 cups of water in blender, mix, add to pot. (Easier to clean the blender) Cut velveeta cheese into 8 or 16 pieces and add to pot. Stir until melted over medium/low heat. Be careful- doesn't taste good if scorched. Season to taste. Usually it doesn't need salt with bacon and cheese, but some pepper is good.

Ron Motley :: Westminster Presbyterian Church Corsicana, TX :: 2007

We have begun a tradition where we prepare and serve soup to our congregation on Super Bowl Sunday. I use one of my grandmother's recipies. The youth get involved by helping prepare the soup and getting the fellowship hall ready. Some collect the money while others serve the soup and seat people. This has given us a chance to really highlight what and why we are doing the Souper Bowl of Caring. We really believe that we raise much more money for our local food pantry ministry this way than just collecting money alone.

Doug Smith, Soulfire Youth Group :: St. John's Lutheran Church Zanesville, OH :: 2007

Soulfire, the high school youth group, suffered through the cold on the third. Temp was 11 and wind was strong. Many people came out to place we were to shop. We beat our goal and have more ideas for next year.

Gayle Waylander :: Trinity Lutheran Montevideo, MN :: 2007

We have been working together with St. Joseph Catholic church on the Souper Bowl of Caring for the past 6 years. Our youth work together to collect money at both churches during worship and then we get together to eat a soup lunch. It has been a great ecumenical event for our congregations.

Micki Weinman Sponsor :: St John's Youth Group Alliance, NE :: 2007

This was our first year to participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring so we didn't do a service Blitz or anything more than collect the money but next year I think we will be more familiar with the program. We had great publicity in our bulletins and in the local newspaper. Our youth group is going to meet on the 11th to present the check to our Just
Neighbors sponsors. They will be present to talk about what they do to help the hungry in
our community. We plan to have Stone Soup.
We will talk about community and hospitality
and read some Bible references. The local newspaper will be present to take a picture.
Thanks for your help and the great idea.

Minister Adolphus Barnes :: First Baptist Church of Oakland Jacksonville, FL :: 2007

We have been blessed by God for the youth of our church, aptly named, "Generation Y.E.S." which signifies Youth Exemplifying Salvation. They are an exciting group of young people who show through their gifts God has given them, who they love through this effort of giving. Their youthfulness and spirit showed in this season of giving as we got the word out to others for support of this giving effort to the local food banks and shelters in Oakland Park and eastside Jacksonville, FL, and the people responded. For the first time participating in the Souperbowl of Caring, they showed a lot of heart and this is only the beginning, the best is yet to come!!! Praise God for Generation Y.E.S. and I pray He continues to bless each and every one of them.

Roberta :: Beatrice Church of the Nazarene Beatrice, NE :: 2007

Our teens really got excited about making soup, desserts, and serving it this year. They had lots of fun while helping a good cause.

K. Haviland :: Franklin Lakes United Methodist Church Franklin Lakes, NJ :: 2007

This year we did a collection in church - the right side of the church be one team; the left side another team.
Every week, each side tried to bring in more cans then the other. The LEFT side WON!
