HOPE LUTHERAN CHURCH

Pastor Carl Witt, Hope Lutheran Church, Palm Desert, CA

Since the first Sunday in February is Boy Scout Sunday, we use our Boy Scout Troop 76 to hold the large soup pots at the doors as the worshippers leave our morning services. Who could resist giving a World Hunger Offering to a Boy Scout?

I loved drawing the pictures to put on the collection pots. We had a fun time deciding what was most needed by families, and finally picked cereal and pasta. I made weekly announcements to let the congregation know what was going on. On souperbowl sunday, me and Rebekah got to do a cheer and cartwheel in church. The best part was everyone put money in the pots as we stood by the door. Our goal was $214 for 2014, but we ended up with $337.82 to help feed the hungry people in our hometown....

Sunday School Snack Chefs Rock!

Christ UMC's Sunday School put down their books and worksheets to roll up their sleeves and make snacks for the congregation on Souperbowl Sunday, February 2, 2014. The children, from kindergarten through 6th grade, rotated through stations including a discussion of hunger, making "puppy chow", making "snack bags" and filling bags with popcorn from a machine generously donated for the day by our local Town & Country Bank. Following worship, the congregation made donations to two meal programs in town and...

What A Bounty!

Momentum for our mission project continued to surge through January. Bag after bag of soup cans poured into the church and completely engulfed our altar. First 76 cans then 146 cans then 239 cans then 393 cans and now our goal has been way far exceeded as we finished the program with 826 cans of soup to donate to the Pantry. Praise God for the generous people of this church. Mission is not just a committee or a budget line item for us, it is a way of life together. What a bounty we have accumulated...

This was our congregations first year participating in many years, and the first year reporting.
Our program was two-fold.
FIRST - was a month long collection of soup competition among the Sunday School classes, with the winners be awarded with a DunkinDonuts party on 2/9/14. The competition was fierce with the JrHigh class leading the way after weeks 1 & 2. The PreSchool class took the lead in week 3, then held off a strong push by the SrHigh class on February 2nd to take the overall title w...

They also carefully considered where to send their donation. Last Sunday they talked with representatives from the Tippecanoe Presbyterian Divine Intervention Ministry to better understand this young program. A few years ago Tippecanoe began an overnight prayer vigil program (they weren't zoned for a typical shelter) that provides a place to stay and a meal during Milwaukee winters. The kids recognized the importance of this ministry, especially during this severe winter, and wanted to honor our...

Goals

We started being a part of "Souper Bowl of Caring" many years ago. The church has "always" had a "food" Sunday each month; where you were to bring cans of food. As time went on people would see it on the church calendar but there was never a big push. The young people became involved with this program and the adults really tired to help them on this day. But then it was only once a year. So I came up with the idea of have each person bring ONE can/food item each Sunday. Told them the women could not do it...
